The Chiryu Festival is a Chiryu-jinja Shrine Festival that has been held since the Edo period. The Main Festival and Ai Festival are held in alternative years on May 2nd (Shigaku) and 3rd (Hongaku). Each of the five towns, Yamamachi, Naka-Shinmachi, Honmachi, Nishimachi, and Takaramachi, which were formerly post towns, dedicates its float at the Main Festival, and Hanaguruma floats at the Ai Festival. After the floats are dedicated to the Chiryu-jinja Shrine at the Main Festival, a Float Bunraku play and Float Karakuri puppet show are performed on the floats. It is said that Float Bunraku plays and Float Karakuri puppet shows have been performed since the the Edo period, and Float Bunraku plays performed on a float by dolls can only be seen in Chiryu. Float Karakuri puppet shows performed in the Joruri Theater style are also said to be very rare. Both of these performances were designated as national important intangible folk-cultural property in 1990. In 2016, the festival was registered in UNESCO's list of intangible cultural heritage as an element of Yama, Hoko and Yatai Float Festivals. The traditional technique passed down by the local people is one of the highlights of the Chiryu Festival.
