  • Yahagi-jinja Shrine Annual Grand Festival
In the Yahagi-jinja Shrine Annual Grand Festival, two floats built in the late Edo period are exhibited and pulled around. The gorgeous floats with carvings by the wood carver Segawa Jisuke Shigemitsu that employ gold dye techniques are designated as Okazaki City's tangible folk-cultural property. On the day of the float parade, the floats run up the slope in front of the shrine having been purified at the shrine, and perform Tachikiri on the street corners, which involves rotating the floats on their front or rear wheels. Children' s dancing adds grace to the festival when the floats stop, and the festival music varies its tempo according to the speed of the floats and resonates throughout the area. In the evening, when the lanterns are lit on the floats that have returned to the area in front of their storage, the visage of the floats that emerges out of the darkness is very romantic. The floats are wildly vigorous during the daytime, but provide peaceful solace at night. The floats that linger quietly along the old Tokaido Road are enthralling.
