- 【A festival with a portable shrine procession and a float parade】
The Nomi Shinmeigu Shrine Annual Grand Festival, in which festival music and dance is performed on eight floats, has been held since the middle of the Edo period. It is one of the three major festivals of Okazaki, and is affectionately known as the "Shinmei-san". The highlights are the portable shrine procession, float parade, and the pulling of the float into the shrine grounds. The portable shrine procession is an important Shinto ritual that has been passed down from the middle of the Edo period to the present day, in which the deity is transferred to a portable shrine and travels around the eleven towns of the shrine parishioners. The procession that extends for several hundred meters resembles a picture scroll of the Heian period. As for the float parade itself, the floats are pulled around the towns of the shrine parishioners whilst festival music unique to each town is played. A stage is pulled out from the floats and a dance is performed at every street corner, which adds gaiety to the festival. The festival reaches its climax when the floats are pulled into the shrine grounds. Lanterns are lit on all eight floats, and they parade through the towns of the shine parishioners as the festival music echoes through the air, before making their way back to the Shinmeigu Shrine together.
