【A profound and gorgeous summer festival that has continued for 601 years】
The Yoi Festival is held on the 4th Saturday of July and the Morning Festival is held on the next day. The main feature of this event is that the floats are festival boats called "Danjiri".
During the Yoi Festival, five makiwara straw boats from Komenoza, Shimogamae, Toge, Ikadaba, and Imaichiba, the five former villages of Tsushima, invite viewers into a subtle and profound world as they float on the river. Each float carries some 400 lanterns in a semicircular mountain shape, with 12 lanterns in a regular year and 13 lanterns in a leap year on the main pillars erected high in the center.
In the Morning Festival, the five Danjiri boats with a new look and Noh dolls on board are led up the Tenno River by the Danjiri boat called the Ichieguruma float from the former Ichie Village. On the way, ten young men in loincloths holding halberds jump from the Ichieguruma into the river one after another, and reach the shore faster than the boat in order to worship the portable shrine at the Otabisho (the place where the portable shrine lodges during a festival). Subsequently, children are carried ashore from the boat on the shoulders of Keigoyaku bodyguards to visit the Otabisho, bring back the portable shrine, and go to the Tsushima-jinja Shrine. The event followed by music played for the deities at the front shrine invites people into a world rich in pageantry.
The Tsushima-jinja Shrine Tenno Festival has continued to be held for nearly 600 years, and a record shows that Oda Nobunaga watched the Morning Festival near the current Otabisho in 1558.
