"We learn from our traditions, aim for harmony between our six floats, and offer visitors once-in-a-lifetime hospitality"
Our six districts will 1. Learn from our long-standing traditions and pass them down to the next generation with a sense of responsibility.
1. Have mutual respect within the six districts for each other's styles, and build strong bonds through joint performance.
2. Cherish this once-in-a-lifetime experience and organize the festival with a heart of hospitality, while prioritizing safety.】
The Tokoname District festival is held with six floats: Horakusha of Hoji District, Tokiwasha of Ichiba District, Tokoyamaguruma of Yamakata District, Tokoishiguruma of Okujyo District, Serakusha of Segi District, and Shinmeiguruma of Kitajo District. The festival derives from the victory festival held by the former Tokoname Town as a celebration of victory in the Russo‐Japanese War in 1905. In it, the six districts within the town participated with handmade Hanaguruma floats and the floats they used in their respective district festivals.
Initially, the festival was held on the Army Anniversary on March 10th. A memorial monument for the war dead was built on Mt. Haku (on the east side of former Tokoname High School), and a memorial service was held. There is a story that the floats were pulled up to Mr. Haku.
In the end of Meiji period, the festival date was changed to April 3rd, and the Shinmei-sha Shrine Festival and Tokoishi-jinja Shrine Festival were held in conjunction with the memorial service. In the end of the Taisho period, the festival came to be held over two days; the Shinmei-sha Shrine Festival and Tokoishi-jinja Shrine Festival was held on April 14th, while the memorial service was held on the next day. Later in 1947, after the Second Sino-Japanese War and the Pacific War had ended, the festival resumed, however, the Shinmei-sha Shrine Festival and Tokoishi-jinja Shrine Festival were held on April 14th, while the memorial service was held on October 23rd. Ever since 1974, the festival has been held on the 2nd Saturday and Sunday of April.
The Tokoname District Festival is characterized by the longest float parade in Chita Peninsula, in which all the abovementioned six floats get together and are pulled around the Tokoname District. The fantastical sight of the lanterns swaying slowly to the rhythm of the festival music that is performed on both festival days is truly beautiful.
