In the Oi Summer Festival, the deity of the tutelary Toyouke-jinja Shrine, appeases and comforts the soul of the Tsushima-jinja Shrine deity. The Tsushima-jinja Shrine originates long ago in the "Omiyoshisan" enshrined at the Owari Tsushima-jinja Shrine Tenno Festival that drifted downstream and were taken ashore at the Oi beach. "Omiyoshisan" is an object made of reeds in which the Gozu Tenno (a deity said to be the Indian god Gavagriva) dwells, or which is a manifestation of the Gozu Tenno himself. After the Shinto ritual, the Toyouke-jinja Shrine deity goes to the Tsushima-jinja Shrine on a portable shrine. During this time, Oi's float serves to guard the deity. This unique lacquered float that resembles a Buddhist altar was built in the late Edo period in the current Hagi of Agui Town, Chita County, and came to Oi during the Taisho era after being owned by several districts. Unlike in the daytime, floats with lit lanterns from the three groups guard the deity safely back to the Toyouke-jinja Shrine.
